Lone Stars –
Guided the fugitive slaves along the routes. Conductors could be free Black people, white abolitionists, former slaves, or Native Americans. Crystal Blue Star –
Hide slaves in their homes, which were called “stations,” “safe houses,” or “depots.”

Vigilance Committees

Burst Star –
Groups of African Americans who protected their fellow citizens from kidnappers and slave catchers, especially in urban areas like Boston, New York, and Philadelphia.

Monthly Donor –

Religious Groups

Many denominations played a role, including the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), Congregationalists, Wesleyans, Reformed Presbyterians, African Methodist Episcopal, Presbyterian, and Methodist Episcopal. Quakers are considered the first organized group to help escaped enslaved people.
