Dexter White’s chest still tightens when he sees the Instagram photo of his crumpled body, taken moments after Los Angeles police officers mistook his cellphone for a gun and shot him. In confusion, he pulled out his phone as officers surrounded him while he walked to the corner store, responding to a false report of domestic violence. Believing he had a gun, the officers opened fire, hitting his legs and shoulder. Though he survived, the near-death experience left him traumatized.

White’s shooting was one of at least 38 cases since 2018 where LAPD officers shot unarmed individuals. His traumatic experience led him to file a lawsuit, resulting in a federal jury awarding him $2.35 million in damages. The jury found that Officer Rodolfo Sarmiento violated White’s constitutional rights by firing quickly and triggering a chain reaction among other officers.

The shooting left White with severe injuries and ongoing fear, anxiety, and physical limitations. He avoids driving alone and struggles with panic attacks, especially around police. His children are also traumatized, fearing for his safety whenever he leaves home. The awarded money will help cover medical bills, but the shooting cost him a record deal and left him with permanent injuries. Dexter White continues to endure the physical and emotional scars of that fateful day, fighting to reclaim some semblance of normalcy in his life.
