Jesse Miller played a pivotal role in addressing issues related to payday lending and felony disenfranchisement by organizing and facilitating community engagement initiatives. She organized community panel and listening sessions that brought together city officials, community leaders, and the public to discuss these pressing issues. Jesse meticulously prepared agendas and facilitated meetings for both coalition and board gatherings, ensuring productive and focused discussions.
Representing SPAN, Jesse attended coalition meetings and worked tirelessly to locate and organize consumers willing to share their personal experiences with payday lending. Her efforts included meeting with legislators to educate them on the challenges of felony disenfranchisement and the predatory practices of payday lenders. To further amplify consumer voices, she created a dedicated website to collect stories, developed informative materials and brochures to empower payday loan consumers, and produced a 4-minute CD featuring four compelling consumer stories.
Jesse also set up a 1-800 number to gather additional consumer stories and produced a TV commercial that aired for six weeks, encouraging more people to come forward. Her multifaceted approach not only raised awareness about the impacts of payday lending but also provided critical support and resources for consumers seeking to assert their rights. Through her dedicated efforts, Jesse significantly contributed to the advocacy and education surrounding these crucial issues.
